At the age of twenty-one, Franz Johann travelled overland from Germany to India and was deeply impressed by the encounters with people and the experience of new landscapes and cultures.

He later delighted audiences in Europe, the USA and Japan as theatre director and performing artist for over 30 years.

In order to give space to his diverse interests and to commit himself to a better world, he studied nature conservation and environmental sciences, obtained a doctorate in natural sciences and was successful as a researcher. His work on forest ecosystems and mammals received international recognition. You find download links for his most relevant papers below.

Franz Johann worked for the University of Freiburg i. Br. (Germany), University of Sassari (Italy), for the Wildlife Reseach Unit of the German federal state Baden-Württemberg and for the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation.

On his travels, he captured significant moments of life in unforgettable photographs. His experience in art, his love for the simple life and his knowledge of the environment made unique images possible.
