Description
Siamangs are the largest of the gibbon species. The males reach about 1 m (3.3 ft) in height, and up to 14 kg (31 lb) in weight. Leaves are the main component of their diet. Fortunately, this wild siamang on Sumatra paused during breakfast and allowed a brief glimpse of its face not obscured by the colourful young leaves. The habitat of the siamangs has significantly decreased in recent decades due to the clearance of forests for palm oil plantations, and deforestation continues at present. Siamangs are classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List.
